Landscape Maintenance Certificate Program – 9 week
Course Overview: Designed for individuals impacted by seasonal layoffs, our Landscape Maintenance Certificate Program, fully funded by the Workforce Competitiveness Trust Fund through the Senator Donnelly Workforce Success Grants, offers specialized training during the winter months (January – March). This program equips participants with comprehensive skills and knowledge endorsed by the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP), aiming to transition seasonal work into stable, year-round careers.
Curriculum Highlights:
- Certificate Aligned Training: Receive the NALP’s Certificate for Landscape Management in Fundamentals and Maintenance, covering:
- First Aid & Safety
- Landscape Plan Reading & Calculations
- Introduction to Irrigation System Components & Maintenance
- Landscape and Turf Equipment Safety & Maintenance
- Planting, Turf Installation and Maintenance
- Pest, Tree & Shrub Management
- Localized Learning and Expert Insights: Enhances the NALP curriculum with local garden history, plant care and identification, garden design and landscape construction. Features guest speakers expert in Cape Cod ecosystems and soil.
- Hands-On Experience: Utilizes the CCRTHS Horticulture Capital Skills grant equipment for practical demonstrations in small engine, tools, and machine care. Participants also engage in a comprehensive garden design project.
- Digital and Safety Training: Includes online safety and equipment training certifications through Greenius, alongside the creation of a personal database of Cape Cod plants.
- Professional Preparation: Content from the Massachusetts Certified Landscape Professional study guide aids in plant care and identification, with additional tree and shrub pruning knowledge.

About The Instructor
Instructor Stephen Dolan has been teaching horticulture at Cape Cod Tech for over 10 years after 15 years of golf course and turf management. With a degree in agriculture, Stephen sits on the board of Mass Horticulture, a venerable not for profit with historic roots. Alice Marcus Krieg owned a landscape design/build company in New York City for 20 years and was producer, writer and cohost of an award winning podcast: We Dig Plants™ for 10 years. She branded and marketed a proprietary soil product for national and international distribution and designed gardens for residential, commercial and institutional clients. She holds a Masters Degree in Urban Planning and Placemaking with an undergraduate degree in Art History and a certificate in Horticulture from New York Botanical Garden. We use the instructors’ experience as part of the evaluation process based on their understanding of what is needed in a new employee.
